Recurve Sight Setup: Common Aiming Problems and How to Fix Them
When your sight pin will not settle or your arrows begin moving across the target, it is easy to assume something is wrong with your recurve sight setup.
Sometimes that is true. Loose hardware, inconsistent mounting or poor alignment can all create problems. But a sight can only provide a reference. It cannot correct a changing anchor, inconsistent string picture, excessive draw weight or a poorly executed shot.
The first step is identifying whether the problem comes from your sight, the rest of your bow setup or your shooting.
Recurve Sight Troubleshooting: The Quick Version
Before changing anything, ask these questions:

Did one arrow move, or did the whole group move?

Is the sight physically loose?

Is the extension bar in its normal position?

Is your anchor and string picture consistent?

Are you tired, over-bowed or holding longer than normal?

Did the wind, light or shooting distance change?

Has any other part of the bow or arrow setup changed?
Do not adjust your sight based on one poor shot. Shoot a controlled group, look for a repeatable pattern and change one variable at a time.
What a Recurve Sight Can—and Cannot—Do
A recurve sight gives the archer a repeatable aiming reference and allows precise elevation and windage adjustments.
Under World Archery target rules, a recurve sight can have one aiming point, an extension bar and elevation and windage adjustments. It cannot use magnification, a level, a peep sight or an electronic aiming aid.
This makes a consistent anchor and string picture especially important. The sight aperture, blurred bowstring and target must return to the same relationship from shot to shot.
A compound target sight can use a magnified scope, levelling bubble and rear peep sight. These features provide additional alignment references, but they do not remove the need for good execution.
Common Recurve Sighting Mistakes
Adjusting the Sight After Every Bad Arrow
One of the most common mistakes is moving the sight after a single arrow lands outside the group.
If your release, anchor or string picture changed, moving the sight only moves the next well-executed arrows away from the center.
Only adjust after several arrows show a consistent group in the same location. A sight adjustment should correct the position of a group, not compensate for one poor shot.
A useful rule is:
If one arrow moves, evaluate the shot. If the group moves, evaluate the sight and conditions.
Using the Sight to Cover Up Inconsistent Form
A recurve sight cannot correct inconsistent execution.
If your head position, anchor or string picture changes, your impact point can change even when the sight remains perfectly secure. The same is true when bow-hand pressure or alignment changes.
Before moving the sight, try to reproduce several normal shots. If the group returns to its previous location, the sight was probably not the source of the problem.
Shooting Too Much Draw Weight
An archer who is over-bowed may be able to draw the bow but struggle to hold it with control.
Common signs include:

The sight dropping during the aim

A raised or collapsing bow shoulder

Shortening the expansion process

Releasing earlier than intended

Increasing movement late in a practice session

Form breaking down after only a few ends
Stabilizer changes will not solve a draw-weight problem. If aiming quality declines rapidly as you shoot, evaluate fatigue, conditioning and draw weight before adding or moving mass.
Trying to Force the Sight Pin to Stop
The sight pin will move. Trying to freeze it perfectly in the center can create tension, hesitation and poor execution.
Elite archers do not eliminate all movement. They build a repeatable aiming pattern and continue the shot while the sight moves within an acceptable area.
The goal is not a motionless sight picture. The goal is controlled movement combined with confident execution.
String Picture and Aperture Alignment
Recurve archers use the blurred bowstring as an additional alignment reference. The exact string position can vary based on the athlete’s anchor, facial structure and shooting system.
What matters most is consistency.
If the string blur changes position from shot to shot, the bow can point in a different direction even though the aperture appears centered on the target. This often creates horizontal variation.
Check that:

Your anchor is repeatable.

Your head remains in the same position.
-
The string blur returns to the same reference on the riser or sight aperture.

You are not moving your head to force the sight into position.
The sight should support your normal shot process. Do not change a stable anchor solely to make the string picture look more symmetrical.
The Group Changed After Travel
A changed sight mark after travel does not automatically mean the sight failed.
First, confirm:

The extension bar is in the same position.
-
The sight block and aperture were installed correctly.

The mounting plate and bolts are secure.
-
The aperture did not rotate or change position.
-
The elevation and windage locks are secure.

Your brace height and bow setup have not changed.
Then shoot a controlled group before making a correction. Travel fatigue, different lighting, temperature and unfamiliar surroundings can also affect impact.

Do not assume every horizontal error is cant. Wind, string picture, grip torque, tune and release direction can produce similar results.
Should You Focus on the Pin or the Target?
Many recurve archers keep their visual focus on the target while allowing the aperture to remain in softer focus. This can help the aiming movement feel less forced.
However, visual focus is part of an athlete’s complete shooting system. Different athletes and coaches may use slightly different cues.
The important point is to avoid constantly switching focus or trying to inspect every movement of the aperture. Choose a repeatable visual process that lets you aim without interrupting expansion and execution.
When the Sight Pin Drops Below the Gold
A pin that repeatedly drops can sometimes indicate that the bow feels too front-heavy. It can also come from:

Excessive draw weight

Fatigue

A collapsing bow shoulder

Holding too long

Loss of back tension

A change in head position

Too much total bow mass
If technique remains stable and the bow consistently wants to pull downward, test a small balance adjustment. Possible changes include:

Removing a small amount of front weight

Moving some mass toward the rear

Pulling the sight extension closer to the riser

Reducing total bow mass
Make one change at a time and judge the result over multiple ends.
When the Sight Floats Above the Gold
A sight that repeatedly sits high can sometimes indicate that the bow lacks enough forward balance. But it can also be caused by shoulder position, tension, posture or an aiming habit.
After checking technique, you can experiment with:

Removing some rear weight

Moving the sight farther forward

Testing a longer front rod
The objective is not simply to force the pin lower. The bow should feel controlled throughout the entire shot and react consistently after release.
When the Sight Pulls Left or Right
Consistent lateral movement can sometimes be influenced by side-rod balance. However, left or right movement does not automatically prove that mass needs to move in the opposite direction.
First check:

Head position

Fatigue
